Former Men’s Basketball Player Montez Robinson Named Interim Head Coach at UTM

MARTIN, Tenn. - Former University of North Georgia men's basketball player Montez Robinson has been announced as the interim head coach for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program, the school announced earlier this month.

Robinson played for the then-Saints from 2000-02, shooting just over 50 percent from the floor in his time in a NGCSU uniform. The transfer from Kemper Military Junior College helped North Georgia to 17 wins over his two-year stint. He graduated from NGCSU in 2002 with a degree in criminal justice.

Robinson becomes the 11th head coach in Skyhawk men's basketball history, following Anthony Stewart who tragically passed away on November 15.

A Fairfield, Alabama, native, Robinson was head coach at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi, from 2015-20. Inheriting a program that was under NCAA sanctions, he compiled a 69-86 overall record, including a 50-40 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play (.556 winning percentage). The Braves finished in second place in the SWAC standings with a 13-5 record in each of his first two seasons at the helm, marking the first time that the program pieced together back-to-back winning seasons in league play in 15 years.

Robinson earned SWAC Coach of the Year accolades and was the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 23 Co-Coach of the Year in 2016-17. He was a two-time finalist for the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award and was also a finalist for the 2016 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year Award.

Prior to his stint at Alcorn State, Robinson was an assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman (2011-15), Kennesaw State (2005-11) and Truett McConnell (2002-05).

Robinson completed his Master's degree in transformative leadership from Bethune-Cookman in 2014. He is married to the former Leah Hornbuckle and the couple has two children: a daughter, Tezlyn; and a son, Montez, Jr.
