MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The No. 4 University of North Georgia softball team split its final regular season doubleheader with Georgia College Friday afternoon, clinching the Peach Belt regular season championship outright with a win in game one.
GAME 1 - UNG 6, GC 1
The Bobcats struck first by scoring off of a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, but North Georgia was able to blow the game open starting in the fourth inning on a
Katie Collins single that scored
Marley Stowers to tie the game. The Nighthawks took the lead later in the inning on a wild pitch and never relinquished the lead.
UNG scored on a Bobcat error in the fifth to make the score 3-1 before doubling their output in the sixth, scoring on a bases loaded walk and a Collins RBI double to bring the game to its final.
Kylee Smith (24-2) earned the win, throwing a complete game while scattering four hits. She struck out seven batters along the way.
GAME 2 - GC 8, UNG 5
North Georgia jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a Collins RBI single in the first and a 2-0 lead came on a Stowers RBI single in the second. UNG doubled their lead in the fourth on a
Kaylee Womack single up the middle and a Bobcat error.
Georgia College tied the game in the fourth, plating four runs off of two RBI singles before taking the lead in the fifth on a RBI double. The Bobcats scored again in the sixth inning, plating their final two runs off a RBI single with the bases loaded.
Olivia Sinquefield brought home the game's final run on a RBI groundout in the seventh.
NOTES
- Collins led the Nighthawks at the plate, going 4-for-7 with four RBI in the doubleheader.
NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will host the PBC Tournament next weekend, starting on Friday when UNG will take on UNC Pembroke in the quarterfinals after the Braves clinched the No. 8 seed Friday. Game times will be announced once conference play concludes this weekend.
