FLORENCE, S.C. - The No. 10 University of North Georgia women's tennis team earned their best finish in the Peach Belt Tournament in program history, earning runner-up honors after a 4-1 loss to No. 4 Columbus State Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars earned the doubles point, but UNG gave CSU a scare after
Holly Bennett and
Vaishali Jorge put North Georgia in front in doubles action with a 6-2 win at No. 1. The Cougars earned the point with 6-2 wins at the other two lines.
The Nighthawks briefly tied the match at 1-1 after Marleen Tilgner retired at No. 1 singles, but Columbus State went on to win in straight sets at Nos. 3, 4 and 6 to clinch the championship.
Despite falling in the match, North Georgia swept the tournament MVP honors with
Adrienne Bofinger winning singles MVP while Bennett and Jorge won the doubles MVP for the tournament.
North Georgia will now await the NCAA selection show set for May 7.
