Game Recap: Softball |

Smith Tosses Fifth Perfect Game in Program History as No. 4 Softball Sweeps USC Aiken

DAHLONEGA - For the fifth time in program history and the second time in Peach Belt play, a seven-inning perfect game was thrown by a University of North Georgia softball pitcher as Kylee Smith sat down 21 in a row in the front half of a doubleheader against USC Aiken Friday.

GAME 1 - UNG 6, USCA 0
North Georgia got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the first inning on a RBI single from Kaylee Womack to put UNG up, 1-0. In the third, Olivia Sinquefield singled up the middle to double the Nighthawk lead before UNG scored three in the fourth to put distance between themselves and the Pacers.

The game's final run was scored in the sixth on a Pacer error.

Smith (20-2) struck out 12 of the 21 batters she faced and saved her perfect game by fielding a bunt with one out in the seventh and throwing the Pacer out by a half step at first base.

GAME 2 - UNG 10, USCA 0 (5 inn.)
North Georgia put up six runs in the second inning, all off of RBI singles. Cheyanne Mosteller, Kaylyn Anthony, Womack and Katie Collins each put a single up to score runs in the frame.

In the third, the Nighthawks kept the scoring going with back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles from Marley Stowers, Womack and Collins to get into double figures and to the game's final score.

Smith (21-2) earned the win, going three innings and giving up just one hit and one walk.

NOTES
- The other perfect games in program history are Rachel Bridges vs. St. Augustine in 2005 (14-0 (5 inn.)), Victoria Sink vs. Young Harris in 2014 (7-0), and Courtney Poole in 2015 vs. Tiffin (8-0 (5 inn.)) and in 2016 vs. Coker (9-0 (6 inn.)).

- Smith's perfect game is just the third perfect game in a PBC game in the league's history, joining Sink and North Florida's Gina Ripper in 2001.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will host the Cougars of Columbus State on Wednesday. The doubleheader will start at 4 p.m. with Senior Day festivities after the twinbill.
