ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The No. 11 University of North Georgia men's tennis team fell just short to No. 3 Flagler on Sunday, losing a tight affair, 4-3.
The doubles point went the home team's way, as Flagler won two out of the three matches.
Hugues Renaud and
Ryan Gaskin continued their successful season, winning 6-3 at No. 2.
Singles was a battle from start to finish as UNG came within one match of taking the win. Gaskin got the Nighthawks off to a hot start, emerging victorious 6-3, 6-3. However, the momentum was cut short, as Renaud and Jones both lost in straight sets, Renaud falling just short in a second set tiebreak.
3-1 down and chances of a win fading,
Mark Laishley, starting for the third successive match, pulled out a gutsy win, recording a 7-5, 7-6 victory, to keep the Nighthawks alive. UNG came close, but not close enough, as even Zielen's third set heroics weren't enough, as Bones dropped at No. 6 singles. Zielen's win was extremely impressive, fighting off cramp and the heat to win in three sets.
The Nighthawks sit at 15-5 on the year and 5-3 in PBC play, and play USC Aiken in their final regular season match tomorrow. The match will begin at noon as UNG look to finish the regular season on a high.
