DAHLONEGA - On the final day of the UNG Campus Connection Classic, the No. 7 University of North Georgia softball team split a doubleheader with Palm Beach Atlantic, winning game one before falling in extra innings in the finale.
GAME 1 - UNG 4, PBA 1
The Nighthawks got started in the third inning, getting the bases loaded and scoring two runs after a Sailfish error to go up, 2-0. UNG added a third run in the fourth when
Cheyanne Mosteller crossed home on a wild pitch, making the score 3-0.
The Sailfish got a run back in the fifth on a RBI single, but UNG scored the final run of the game when
Hobby Gregory scored from third on another wild pitch.
Kylee Smith (10-0) got the win, scattering a run and six hits across seven innings while striking out 11.
GAME 2 - PBA 3, UNG 1 (8 inn.)
Palm Beach Atlantic got on the board first, scoring on a RBI single with the bases loaded to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. North Georgia answered in the third on a
Hobby Gregory RBI double to knot the game up, 1-1.
After neither team could score through the seventh, PBA got a two-RBI single from Taylor Pennica in the eighth inning and then held on in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win.
NOTES
- UNG was outhit in the doubleheader, 12-6. PBA had six hits in each game, while UNG got just three in each.
- Smith surpassed 100 strikeouts on the season with her second strikeout of the day in game one.
