GREENWOOD, S.C. - The No. 10 University of North Georgia men's tennis team dropped their first Peach Belt match of the season at No. 4 Lander Saturday, by a score of 5-2.
No. 3 doubles salvaged a 7-5-win, courtesy of
Ryan Gaskin and
Hugues Renaud, but it was too little too late, as seniors
Niklas Zielen and
Jess Jones lost at the No. 1 spot, 6-4. No. 2 doubles had lost first, falling to a strong pairing, 6-0
Singles proved to be a battle with constant momentum switches, but UNG fell short. Renaud recorded an impressive victory at No. 4 singles, coming through 6-1, 6-2, but this was shortly followed by a loss at No. 3 - Gaskin falling 2-6, 2-6. Team captain Zielen continued his rich vein of form, giving the Nighthawks hope with a 6-2 ,6-4 win, but losses at the Nos. 5 and 6 singles spots condemned UNG to defeat.
UNG are now 3-1 in conference play, and 13-3 on the year. They return to the courts Wednesday where they face Francis Marion in another conference match.
