DAHLONEGA - The long ball was present Saturday at Bob Stein Stadium as a total of eight homers were hit between the two teams, but the University of North Georgia baseball team was the one that won both games of the doubleheader to finish the sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic.
GAME ONE - UNG 4, PBA 0
The Nighthawks didn't waste time getting started as
Chase Sudduth blasted the first homer of the day to left center with one out in the first inning to take the early lead. From there,
Nick Clarno took over at the plate.
Clarno doubled the UNG lead in the second on a RBI single to left field that plated
Jake Arnold before doubling the lead again in the sixth with his first homer of the day, a two-run blast that scored
Nik Levensteins and brought the game to its final score.
Steven Bower (1-0) earned the win after going six innings of five-hit baseball while striking out seven.
GAME TWO - UNG 8, PBA 7
North Georgia again got out to an early lead, scoring twice in the second inning beginning with a Clarno RBI double. After the sophomore got to third,
William Mapes brought him home on a sacrifice fly to put UNG up, 2-0.
Conner Corbitt doubled the Nighthawk lead in the next inning, hitting a bomb to left center that scored two more and made the score 4-0. Palm Beach Atlantic answered in the top of the fourth with a Marcos Perez RBI single to cut the lead to three.
Levensteins answered in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run blast on the 11th pitch of the at-bat to push the lead back out to a five-run cushion, but the Sailfish cut it down with one swing of the bat, a grand slam by Mike Santomarita in the sixth to make the score 6-5.
After Clarno hit another solo bomb in the seventh, Andreas Papageorge tied the game with a two-run blast that snuck inside the left field foul pole, but
Crews Taylor hit a bomb that went a mile high to right field in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead for good.
Parker Morrison (1-0) earned the win for UNG, throwing two innings while giving up two runs off just one hit.
Derrick Pickvet earned a no-decision after a seven-inning start.
