FLORENCE, S.C. - In the closest match yet in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, the No. 24 University of North Georgia women's tennis team fell to No. 25 Georgia College, 5-4, Saturday morning at Francis Marion's Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.
The Nighthawks took an early 2-1 lead through doubles as
Felicia Baratta and
Holly Bennett took an 8-1 win at the top flight while
Lexa Loden and
Vaishali Jorge took No. 2 doubles, 8-6.
The Bobcats battled back though, taking the first three singles matches to pull to within one point of clinching. With their backs against the wall, UNG fought back, starting with Jorge's three-set win at No. 4 singles. From there,
Adrienne Bofinger fought back from 5-2 down in the second set to win in straight sets and tie the match.
The match swung in GC's way at No. 6 singles when Emma Niemi finally broke serve in the third set, winning 7-5 and sealing the Bobcats' place in the championship match.
North Georgia will now await the NCAA selection show Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. The Nighthawks are 14-7 and currently sit in fifth in the southeast region.
