Baseball Falls in Pitcher's Duel to No. 21 UNCP, 1-0

DAHLONEGA Cade Heil threw 99 pitches and held No. 21 UNC Pembroke to just one run, but the University of North Georgia baseball team struggled to push runs across and fell to the Braves in a one-run game Friday night at Bob Stein Stadium, 1-0.

It was a battle between the pitchers, as Heil (5-5) and UNCP's Anthony Burke (6-2) went pitch-for-pitch. Heil pitched into the ninth, surrendering only one run off six hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Burke allowed no runs off four hits, one walk and five strikeouts.

The Braves clinched the lead early in the third frame. Seth Hartings stroked a double past short to score Kevon Perkins, who reached on a walk, to put UNCP up 1-0. The Braves threatened again in the fifth, but back-to-back pick offs from Andres Perez ended the plight.

Despite a ninth-inning double from Steven Tomlinson, the Nighthawks were unable to push the tying run across, allowing the Braves to take the 1-0 win in game one of the series.

NOTES
- Chase Sudduth went 2-for-4 with two singles. Tomlinson went 1-for-3 with a double.

- The teams combined for seven errors in the game.

- The Nighthawks left eight runners on base, while the Braves left seven.
