No. 2 Softball Sweeps Lee in Wednesday Doubleheader

DAHLONEGA - Brittany Gilliam went 4-for-5 in the doubleheader as the No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team swept Lee Wednesday afternoon at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium. UNG won game one, 9-4, before a 10-1 run-rule win in five innings in game two.

GAME ONE
The Flames got on the scoreboard first, using a leadoff bunt single and a double to deep center to scratch the scoreboard in the top of the first and take a 1-0 lead.

North Georgia answered in the second inning, taking the lead on a Hobby Gregory RBI single and a Sydney Sprague RBI double to gain a 3-1 lead. The Nighthasks then put up six runs in the bottom of the fourth, capped by a Jordan Deep RBI double.

The Flames, down to their last strike, were able to push two runs across in the top of the fifth on a UNG error and another run in the seventh, but Kylee Smith shut down the Flames to earn her 12th win of the season. The sophomore struck out 10 Lee batters and walked four.

GAME TWO
In the second half of the twinbill, the Nighthawks got on the board first. With two outs, Lexi Duncan singled with two on to give UNG a 1-0 lead. After a walk to Alishia Frierson, Gilliam hit a grand slam to straight-away center to push the lead to 5-0.

After pushing a run across in the second and third innings, North Georgia gave up the only Flame run of the game on a double to left center. UNG quickly answered, scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to get to the run-rule limit.

Amber Johns earned the win, giving up the one run off one hit while striking out three.
