DAHLONEGA — The hot offense of the No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team blew past UNC Pembroke in a 7-3 and 11-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon, in Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium. With this doubleheader sweep, the Nighthawks advance to 4-0 in the Peach Belt Conference.
GAME ONE
The Braves were first on the board in the third after a squeeze play at the plate. Rendi Wetherington laid the bunt down to score Lexie Coxe, who reached on a hit-by-pitch, claiming the lead for UNCP, 1-0.
Lexi Duncan and
Alishia Frierson responded for the Nighthawks in the third with a two-RBI single hammered past the shortstop and a three-run homer off the scoreboard, respectively, to claim the lead for UNG, 5-1.
UNCP answered back in the next frame with a two-RBI double to left center from Jessica Auld to cut the lead to 5-3, prompting North Georgia to fight back. Another Duncan RBI-double off left center wall scored
Marley Stowers, who reached on a walk, to tack on an extra run for the Nighthawks, 6-3. A push bunt from
Kaylyn Anthony forced a throwing error in the sixth, allowing Stowers to score from first and end the game, 7-3.
Kylee Smith earned the win in the circle for the Nighthawks, while UNCP's Malerie Leviner was issued the loss.
GAME TWO
North Georgia stepped on the gas in game two with a five-inning game, winning the contest 11-1, and securing the series against UNC Pembroke. The Braves were first on the board again in the second off a solo homerun to left from Lexie Coxe, the only run that would be scored for UNCP.
The Nighthawks claimed the lead in the third frame off a RBI sacrifice fly from
Marley Stowers to score
Hobby Gregory, who reached base on a single to left.
Sydney Sprague scored behind Gregory off an overthrow to the plate to put UNG up, 2-1. Hot bats extended the lead to 5-1 in the frame.
UNG offense was even hotter in the fourth. A three-run homer from Stowers got the rally going for Hammontree and
Alishia Frierson to come behind her with two solo shots of their own to win the game in shortened fashion.
