ORLANDO - The No. 17 University of North Georgia men's tennis team swept singles play en route to an 8-1 win over Augustana in the second day of the Nighthawks' Spring Break trip in Florida Wednesday afternoon.
The top two doubles teams for UNG got things started with 8-3 wins over their counterparts. The Vikings were able to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, but it wasn't without a fight from
Zack Waldow and
Jared Bones who battled the entire match to keep it close.
Waldow got his revenge at No. 4 singles, winning in straight sets to get North Georgia back on the winning path.
Ryan Gaskin,
Kevin Candido Magnusson and
Carl Bedrot each won in straight sets as well. While also winning in two sets,
Mark Laishley needed to grind out a 7-5 second set to get the win at No. 3 singles.
The only singles match to need a third set came at the second flight.
Tim Kiehl fell behind a set after a 6-4 loss in the first but responded with a 6-2 second set win. In the third set tiebreaker, both Kiehl and AU's Zach Adkins went back and forth with Kiehl finally breaking serve late to win, 10-8.
The Nighthawks will next take the court in one week on the road at Augusta in PBC play. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m.
