Hammontree Leads No. 7 Softball to Two Wins Over Rollins

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Shelby Hammontree hit 4-for-8 in the second day of the South/Southeast Region Crossover, hosted by Flagler, including a walk-off homer in game one as the No. 7 University of North Georgia softball team swept Rollins in a doubleheader Saturday.

GAME ONE
North Georgia took an early 3-0 lead on singles from Kaylyn Anthony and Kali Turner, but Rollins answered with a five-run third inning that was highlighted by two homeruns in the frame.

The Nighthawks continued to fight, though, scoring in the fifth inning on a Sydney Sprague solo shot and a wild pitch in the sixth inning that tied the game, 5-5.

In the eighth, after shutting down Rollins, Hammontree led off the inning with the walk-off bomb to right center that earned the win.

Kylee Smith earned the win in relief, striking out three in 1.1 innings of work. Kalen Chambers threw 4.1 innings of shutout softball, giving up just two hits.

GAME TWO
Smith continued her outstanding start to 2018 in the circle, striking out 11 Rollins batters in just five innings of work. She struck out the side in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

The Nighthawks scored right away as Alishia Frierson scored Sprague on a single through the right side. UNG then scored the next three runs off of Rollins errors, increasing the lead to a 4-0 score.

In the fourth, Hammontree got things going again, bringing home a run on RBI single with the bases loaded. On the next at bat, Frierson brought home two more on a single before Hammontree got the game to the eight-run limit on a single in the sixth inning.

NOTES
- North Georgia is now 10-0 to start the season.

- Smith now has 53 strikeouts in just five appearances this season. She is 5-0 in 2018.

- Marley Stowers hit the first triple of the season for UNG in the second game.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will finish play at the South/Southeast Region Crossover tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. matchup against West Alabama.
