No. 17 Softball Extends Winning Streak to Six with Sweep of Lander

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The 17th-ranked University of North Georgia softball team reversed the script of Saturday's doubleheader by winning a tight game in game one before run-ruling the visiting Bearcats of Lander in the second game of the day to get the doubleheader sweep, UNG's third straight. The Nighthawks improve to 33-9 on the season with a 13-4 mark in Peach Belt Conference play.

GAME ONE
North Georgia got on the board early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first off a two-run home run to left center by Kaylyn Anthony. Lander would even the score in the fourth though as Dariean Ward smacked a two-run single to right center to tie the game at 2-2.

Jordan Deep answered the call in the home half of the fourth though with a solo shot over the centerfield wall to give UNG the 3-2 lead that proved final.

Kylee Smith (19-3) earned the win allowing the two runs on six hits and a walk, while recording five strikeouts.

GAME TWO
The Bearcats scored their only run of the ballgame in the top of the first with a Brianna Surrento seeing-eye single through the right side that put Lander up 1-0. The Nighthawks answered with a rally in the bottom frame though with back-to-back RBI doubles by Alishia Frierson and Anthony followed by an RBI groundout by Deep that put the Nighthawks ahead, 3-1.

UNG would tack on three more in the fourth with a two-run single up the middle by Stephanie Hartness and an RBI single to right center by Frierson. Sydney Sprague extended the lead to 8-1 in the fifth with a two-run single up the middle.

Kaycie Oakley came in to score the run-rule clinching run in the bottom of the sixth on a throwing error after Lander threw down to third as Morgan Helton stole second base. The throw went wide of the third baseman allowing Oakley to score easily and end the game.

Amber Johns (8-2) picked up the win in the circle for UNG allowing one run on just four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Bria Bush pitched a perfect sixth inning for the Nighthawks in relief.

NOTES
- Lexi Duncan, Stephanie Hartness, and Sydney Sprague all led the UNG effort at the plate with three hits each on the day. Kaylyn Anthony's three RBI across the doubleheader led the team in run production.

- Kylee Smith's 19 wins are the second most in the Peach Belt Conference and her 1.04 earned run average is the best in the league.

- UNG improves to 25-1 all-time against Lander. North Georgia has won 24 straight over the Bearcats.
