PEMBROKE, N.C. — Sunday afternoon's rubber match between the top-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team and UNC Pembroke was going quite well for the Nighthawks until the Braves scored five runs in an unlikely two-out rally in the seventh to eventually take down UNG, 6-4. The Nighthawks slip to 22-6 on the year and now stand at 9-3 in Peach Belt Conference play, guaranteed at least a share of first play coming out of the weekend.
Michael Gouge started a two-out rally with a single to right in the top of the first that would pay off for the Nighthawks.
Trevor Sams followed with a single up the middle and after both players advanced to second and third on a wild pitch,
Michael Bell deposited a two-run single to center to hand UNG an early 2-0 lead.
North Georgia starter
Dylan Peppers (2-2) made that score stand up through the first six innings, taking his no-hit effort into the seventh. After recording two quick outs and being just a strike away from ending the seventh inning, Peppers hit a batter and had a difficult time finding what became an inconsistent strike zone, walking the next two batters to load the bases. From there the Braves went on to score five runs before UNG could record the final out of the inning.
The Nighthawks answered with two runs in the top of the eighth scoring on an RBI double to right by Bell and seeing another run come in on a throwing error to pull UNG within one, 5-4. UNCP would pick up an unearned run of their own in the home half of the inning however to take a two-run advantage into the ninth.
UNG loaded the bases with just one out and the heart of the order up to bat in the top of the ninth but couldn't find the timely hit needed to tie the game with a strikeout and a ground out ending the game.
NOTES
- The loss was an incredibly frustrating one for the Nighthawks who outhit UNCP 10-3 on the day, but three errors paired with eight walks and two hit batsmen gave the Braves the ammunition needed to score their six runs on just three hits.
- Highlighting the rarity of the Pembroke two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, UNG used just four pitchers in the game but all four appeared in the inning with two unable to record an out.
- The series loss is the fourth straight at Sammy Cox Field for North Georgia. UNC Pembroke now leads the all-time series, 19-17.
NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will return to the friendly confines of Bob Stein Stadium on Wednesday, March 29 hosting Southern Wesleyan in a midday matchup set for a 1 p.m. start.
