CARROLLTON, Ga. — The third-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team used a six-run fourth inning to pull away from in-state foe West Georgia and went on to down the Wolves, 14-7, Wednesday evening at Carrollton High School's baseball field. The game was moved to Carrollton High after an overnight irrigation malfunction left the playing surface at Cole Field unplayable. The Nighthawks move to 18-4 on the year and extend their season-long winning streak to eight games.
UNG got on the board in the top of the first as
Michael Gouge drove in
Connor Hoover from second with an RBI single through the left side. The Wolves answered the call in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly and took the lead in the second with back-to-back-to-back two-out hits, plating two runs to give UWG a 3-1 lead.
Devin Gearhart cut the lead to one in the top of the third with an RBI single through the right side that plated
Bill Leroy from third. UNG broke the game wide open in the fourth, scoring four runs, highlighted by Hoover's grand slam to right to put North Georgia back on top, 8-3.
The two teams traded runs in the fifth and the Nighthawks added two runs in the seventh, including
Steven Tomlinson scoring on a double-steal and UNG would tack on three more in the eighth, including a two-run double to left center by Hoover.
The Wolves put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth but could only scratch across two runs giving the game its final score, 14-7.
