MORROW, Ga. — After mounting a double-digit comeback in the fourth quarter, the University of North Georgia women's basketball team fell to Clayton State, 58-57, Monday evening on a third-chance shot that the Lakers got off with less than half of a second remaining in the game. The Nighthawks fall to 17-6 on the season and 9-5 in the Peach Belt Conference.
Clayton State led for the vast majority of the game and found themselves with a 12-point advantage over UNG heading into the fourth quarter. The Nighthawks went on a 9-0 run to start the final period of play and bring the game back within one possession. North Georgia finally took the lead on a
Jordan Livesay free-throw with just over three minutes left in the game. The Nighthawks held a one-point lead in the closing seconds but after two misses and two offensive rebounds, CSU's Andrea Benford found the net after tossing the ball up in desperation just as time expired, giving the Lakers the narrowest of victories.
NOTES
-
Kelsey Hutchins led all scorers with 19 points and along with
Amber Skidgel, collected a game-high of eight rebounds.
- UNG only utilized eight players in the game and only six scored. The five points off the bench is the lowest mark for the Nighthawks this season.
- Clayton State clinches the season series with tonight's win. The victory also significantly changes the outlook of hosting a PBC Quarterfinal game for both teams as Clayton State now holds a full two-game lead over North Georgia and with having swept the season series, the Nighthawks would have to finish with a better record in the league to claim the No. 2 seed in the division over CSU.
