No. 27 Baseball Soars Past Carson-Newman, 13-4, to Clinch Series Victory

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The 27th-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team came out swinging in Saturday afternoon's matchup against Carson-Newman, scoring nine runs in the first three innings in route to a 13-4 win over the Eagles to clinch the series victory. The Nighthawks improve to 2-0 on the young season with the win.
 
UNG scored two runs in the first with RBI singles from Trevor Sams and Michael Bell and followed with three runs in the second inning with RBI doubles from Devin Gearhart and Sams, Bell would bat in another run with a groundout to shortstop to give North Georgia a 5-0 lead after two.
 
Conner Corbitt started off a big third inning with a leadoff home run. Steven Tomlinson followed with a walk and a stolen base and then advanced to third on an Andres Perez single to left. Connor Hoover pushed in a pair of runs with a double to left center. Hoover advanced to third on the throw home and would come in to score a Michael Gouge ground out to third, extending the Nighthawk lead to 9-0.
 
The Eagles finally answered with a pair of runs in the fourth but UNG would get the runs back in the fifth with a RBI double to right center by Perez and a sacrifice fly to right by Sams. Corbitt would drive in another run in the sixth with a RBI single up the middle to plate Anthony Carco. After Carson-Newman hit a pair of homers in the seventh, Corbitt launched his second long ball of the day in the bottom of the eighth to give the game its final score, 13-4.
 
NOTES
- Sophomore left-hander Steven Bower (1-0) earned the win on the mound in his first start of the season. Bower went 5.1 innings allowing just two runs on eight hits while striking out six. C-N starter Grant Rabbitts (0-1) was chased after filing just one out in the top of the first allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of walks.
 
- Logan Burt earned the three-inning save for UNG, his first of the season. Burt allowed just two hits with one walk and five strike outs.
 
- This is just the fifth season since baseball was reinstated at UNG that North Georgia has started out 2-0 and it is the first time since 2011. The best start in school history is the 7-0 mark set by the 2005 squad that went on to be the winningest team in UNG history with 57 wins.

The Nighthawks will go for the series sweep over Carson-Newman tomorrow. First pitch for the Sunday matinee is set 1 p.m.
