No. 27 Baseball Soars Past Albany State, 19-4

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The 27th-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team took all three games on the weekend in the 2017 Nighthawks Nest Classic after a 19-4 victory over Albany State Sunday Afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium. The Nighthawks advance to 10-3 on the season with the win.

Action picked up for the Nighthawks in the bottom of the third as Connor Hoover and Michael Gouge were brought home by a homerun hit deep over the centerfield fence by Michael Bell, giving North Georgia the early 3-0 lead.

The UNG bats came alive again in the fourth, scoring three more runs off three hits including a deep-hit double to right center from Gouge that brought home Kal Dempsey and Steven Tomlinson.

The Golden Rams put three runs on the board in the top of the fifth after four hits, including a double from Chasen Roulhac who would later be driven home by Kalvin Wimbish to end the Albany State inning trailing just 6-3.

The Nighthawks quickly regained the three runs given up in the top half of the inning, scoring three runs off of two hits, three walks and a ball that hit Trevor Sams and brought home Dempsey to make the score 9-6.

North Georgia continued to rack up the runs, scoring six in the bottom of the sixth, including a bases clearing double from Gouge and a two-run-homerun from Sams to make the score 15-3.

Albany State went on to score another run in the eighth, but it would not be enough as the Nighthawks tacked on four more in the bottom half of the inning to make the final score 19-4.

Derrick Pickvet (3-0) was credited with the win after giving up just one in two innings of relief work for the Nighthawks.

NOTES
- Trevor Sams earned his first homerun on the season after hitting the long shot down the left field line in the sixth.

- Daniel McCrary got the start for UNG and was just one out away from becoming the pitcher of record in line for the win. The junior was perfect through three innings and went on to give up just four hits against the 20 batters he faced in his 4.2 innings of work.

- The last time the Nighthawks scored 19 runs in a game was in a 19-3 victory over Francis Marion last season in Dahlonega.

- Today was the first ever meeting between North Georgia and Albany State.
