DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The eighth-ranked University of North Georgia softball team finished a perfect 6-0 at the 2017 Steak 'n Shake Classic as the Nighthawks swept a pair of games against Mars Hill, 6-2, West Georgia, 2-1, in the eight innings. With the two victories North Georgia improves to 10-2 on the season.
GAME ONE
The Nighthawk bats came alive in the bottom half of the second inning with back-to-back doubles from
Kaylyn Anthony and
Shelby Hammontree scoring the first run of the day. UNG used some heads up baserunning to pick up another run, giving the Nighthawks the 2-0 advantage.
The hot streak continued for North Georgia in the third as four runs were scored off of five hits, including a double and triple from Alisha Frierson and Steph Hartness, respectively.
The Lions fought back from the 6-0 deficit in the fourth, putting two on the board with a homerun to left field from Kaleigh Jonas and a single from Casey Stanek that brought home the second Mars Hill run.
The Mars Hill effort was not enough as they fell, 6-2, giving
Kylee Smith (6-0) her sixth win with four innings pitched that including six strikeouts and just two runs allowed.
Amber Johns earned her first save as a Nighthawk, tossing three innings of effective relief to close out the game.
GAME TWO
West Georgia struck first in the second inning, scoring just as they did Saturday against the Nighthawks, with a homerun to left center, this time from Peyton Stallworth. The Nighthawks battled back and tied the game in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly from
Morgan Helton, driving in
Whitney Worth from third.
The winning run came for the Nighthawks in the top of the eighth as a bunt single from
Jessica Finch scrambled the West Georgia defense, allowing
Stephanie Hartness enough time to score from third.
Bria Bush (3-2) earned te win in the circle going all eight innings for UNG allowing just the one run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Kylee Smith gave up just four hits in her four innings of work in game one, making it her fifth outing with four or less hits allowed this season.

Stephanie Hartness went 3-for-3 at the plate in game two, and scored what became the game-winning run.
- With the victories in day three, North Georgia is now 11-0 all-time against Mars Hill and 20-7 against West Georgia.
NEXT UP
The Nighthawks travel to Rome, Georgia on Tuesday, Feb. 14 for doubleheader action against Shorter, marking the first time the two teams will have faced off since the 2015 NCAA DII Championship semifinals. The twin bill is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
