MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The eighth-ranked University of North Georgia softball team extended their winning streak to 12 on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep at Montevallo, 6-1 and 9-1 in five innings. The Nighthawks move to 31-5 and continue to pace the Peach Belt Conference at 12-0 in league play.
Courtney Poole (25-1) picked up both victories for UNG, pitching all 12.0 innings on the day. Poole struck out a combined 10 while only allowing one earned run,
Game OneThe Nighthawks came out swinging in game one, as
Meagan May leadoff the game with a double to center field and then came home to score just minutes later on a RBI single to right field by
Kim McMillan. After McMillan stole third,
Ansley Phillips drove her in with a RBI groundout to second base, putting UNG up 2-0.
May drove in the third run of the game for North Georgia with a RBI single up the middle to score
Meredith Heyer in the third, but the Falcons would answer with an unearned run in the bottom frame of the inning to make it a 3-1 game.
McMillan blasted a two-run home run to left center, her 12th of the season, to extend the Nighthawk lead to 5-1 in the fifth. UNG would score one more run in the sixth off aggressive base running for the final 6-1 score.
Game TwoThe Hawks got off to a quick start again in the second game of the day, plating five runs highlighted by RBI singles from Phillips,
Victoria Prince and Heyer.
Montevallo scored their lone run in the second and it would be North Georgia from there on out. Heyer drove in
Katie Block with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-1. Then McMillan belted her 13th home run of the season in the fourth to make it a 7-1 game.
UNG pushed two more runs across in the fifth with a RBI double to right center by Prince and a RBI single to left by
Taylor Anne Merritt, giving North Georgia the 9-1 lead for the run-rule victory.
