UNG Baseball Team Grabs Sole Possession Of First Place With 10-2 Victory Over Pirates

DAHLONEGA | The University of North Georgia baseball team scored in six of eight frames as the Nighthawks posted a 10-2 win over No. 9 Armstrong State in a battle of the Peach Belt Conference's top two teams. The series win moves UNG to 20-9, 14-4 and in sole possession of the league's top spot.Tremayne Toorie set the tone early by belting a first-inning grand slam home run, his second bases-clearing homer in five days.

The Nighthawks' win knocks the Pirates (24-7, 13-4 PBC) out of first place in the PBC standings as North Georgia moves a half of a game ahead of the pack with the win.

North Georgia drew three walks in the first inning off of Armstrong starter JT Phillips (3-3), before Toorie launched a grand slam home run to put the Nighthawks up early, 4-0.

Connor Hoover's sacrifice fly in the second pushed North Georgia's lead to 5-0. Armstrong answered with two runs in the fourth inning on R.J. Dennard's RBI single and a passed ball, but the Pirates would be limited to just two singles the rest of the way as North Georgia claimed the win and the series.

Dylan Peppers (3-1) picked up the win for the Nighthawks, giving up four hits and two runs in seven innings of work, walking one while striking out eight.

Joey Cecere went 3-for-5 for UNG, while Toorie finished with two hits and four RBI. Kendrick Thompson had two hits to pace the Armstrong offense.

North Georgia returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 31) when the Nighthawks step out of conference play for a mid-week road trip to Carrollton, Ga. to take on West Georgia.
