HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The University of North Georgia softball team picked up another pair of impressive wins Saturday in the opening weekend of play at the UAH Charger Chillout. The first win of the day, a 10-0 run-rule victory over Miles, was the 600th career win for UNG head coach
Mike Davenport.
Courtney Poole earned the win in the circle in both games, throwing a combined 12.0 innings with 16 strikeouts on the day.
Game OneThe Nighthawks scored early and often in the matinee against Miles, picking up three runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third and a single run in the fifth.
Kim McMillan led the charge at the plate with a double, a home run and three RBI.
Davenport used the majority of his lineup in the game, with 19 of his 22 players making their way onto the field in the contest.
UNG scored more runs (10) than they had hits (9), aided by six Golden Bear errors in the field.
Game TwoNorth Georgia saw its toughest competition yet in the matchup with No. 21 Indianapolis, a team that had already upset No. 12 Alabama-Huntsville earlier in the day.
UNG jumped on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. After
Meredith Heyer reached on a fielder's choice, she scored all the way from first on
Tiffanie Burns' RBI triple down the right field line. Burns would come in to score herself on a passed ball to give North Georgia the 2-0 advantage.
The Greyhounds used two long balls to break North Georgia's scoreless-inning-streak at 20. Erika Goodwin knocked out a two-run shot followed by Casey Williamson homer, to take the lead, 3-2. It marked the first time this season that the Nighthawks had trailed.
McMillan would come in to score in the top of the fifth on a
Jessica Finch RBI single to center, equaling the score at 3-3.
The Nighthawks scored two in the first frame of extra innings, as a
Meagan May double scored McMillan from second and later
Courtney Poole would drive in May on a sacrifice fly to give UNG the 5-3 lead that proved final.
Next UpNorth Georgia wraps up its slate in the marathon opener on Sunday with games against Delta State and No. 12 Alabama-Huntsville.
