DAHLONEGA | Despite a season-low offensive output, the University of North Georgia women's basketball team was able to fend off Brevard, 56-42, and extend its season-opening winning streak to six games. The 56 points was 18 points less than the previous offensive low but was enough to earn the Nighthawks' sixth win of the season.
Molly Rainwater led four North Georgia players in double figures with a game-high 15 points fueled by four-of-nine from behind the three-point line.
Lauren Pounds posted a season-high 13 points while
Kelsey Hutchins and
Stephanie Huffman added 12 and 11 respectively.
Brevard (0-3) was led by Chelsea Turner who came off the bench to post a team-high 12 points. All 12 of her points came by virtue of a four-of-seven afternoon from behind the three-point line.
Madison Lenox added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Tornados.
Hutchins rounded out her third double-double of the year with a game-best 13 rebounds.
The Nighthawks held a 46-36 edge on the glass and held the Tornados to a dismal 15-for-55 from the field (27%).
Following a first half that saw only 37 points scored (UNG led 22-15), North Georgia held BC at bay for the duration of the second half, always holding at least a two possession lead.
The season-opening six-game winning streak sets a new NCAA-era standard for North Georgia.
UNG returns to the court on Tuesday, December 2 with a non-conference road trip to Lenoir-Rhyne.
