DAHLONEGA | Despite trailing over 36 minutes on the night, the University of North Georgia men's basketball team was able to mount a final charge to push past Emmanuel, 74-70 on Thursday evening in Memorial Hall.
Ten different Nighthawks scored as North Georgia used a balanced offensive attack led by a team-best 15 from
Shaquan Cantrell.
Corey Green added 10 while
Sean Brennan pitched in with nine points, all of which came from the free throw line.
The Nighthawks were a dismal 3-19 from the three-point line including missing all 10 long distance tries in the first half. North Georgia was also plagued from the free throw line, connecting on just 25-42 attempts (60%).
Emmanuel (1-3) was led by a game-high 24 points from Michael Stanley. The senior guard made 10 of 12 free throws and matched teammate Patrick McCrary with nine rebounds.Â
The Lions held a 44-33 rebounding edge, but North Georgia was able to force 19 EC turnovers compared to just 10 from the Nighthawks.
Emmanuel led by 14 on two different occasions and led by nine (65-56) with just 5:23 remaining. A 13-3 run capped by a pair of free throws from
Corey Green gave the Nighthawks the lead with just 49 seconds remaining.Â
Emmanuel would retake the lead on a pair of free throws from Jeremy Burgess with 22 seconds remaining, but Brennan put the game away scoring the final five points all from the charity stripe.
North Georgia (3-0) returns to action on Monday, November 24 when the Nighthawks travel to Rome, Ga. to take on Shorter. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
