How Welp got to UNG
In 2024, Maggie Welp made her way to Dahlonega from nearby Atlanta, Ga. and Decatur High School where she ran cross country along with indoor and outdoor track & field. As a cross country athlete, Welp ran a 19:38.39 in the 5K at Decatur. She ran a 2:40.01 time in the 800-meter indoor race. In long distance outdoor track, Welp recorded good times in the 5000-meter (20:15.51), 3200-meter (11:51.50), 2000-meter steeplechase (8:20.00) and 1600-meter (5:34.58). Ever the competitor, Welp says her biggest sports thrill is simply "winning." She picked UNG because of the team environment and because she loved the campus.
