Blood Mountain is the highest peak on the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail and is the midpoint between the University of North Georgia and Young Harris College. Blood Mountain is the sixth highest mountain in Georgia with an elevation of 4,458 feet and is located on the border of Lumpkin and Union counties and is within the boundaries of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blood Mountain Wilderness area. The Battle of Blood Mountain is an annual rotating trophy between the University of North Georgia and Young Harris College athletic departments, as the two schools are only 42 miles apart and have a natural rivalry as NCAA Division II member schools.

Scoring: For each of the 11 sports that both schools sponsor, there is one annual point awarded to the school that wins the majority of contests in that particular sport in a given season. If teams only play once, the team that claims the regular season contest will earn the point. If teams play twice, a team must win both contests to win the point. If teams split the series, each team will be awarded a half point. In a three-game season, teams must win the series to earn the point. If UNG and YHC play each other in NCAA postseason play, those contests will be added to the competition totals. Season points will not be awarded until the completion of the respective sport's NCAA regional to allow for any postseason competitions to be added.

Sports of Competition (11): Women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's golf, women's golf, men's tennis and women's tennis.  A school must earn six of the 11 points to outright win the cup. In case of a 5.5-5.5 tie, the team in possession of the trophy will retain – similar to golf's Ryder Cup.

Reward: The school that wins the annual competition will get to house the trophy for the next academic calendar year. The athletic director of the losing school will be required to wear the opposing school's colors while presenting the trophy to the winning school at an on-campus event of the winner's choice.
