DAHLONEGA – University of North Georgia (UNG) head men's basketball coach
Dan Evans has announced the hiring of Tre Armstrong as the program's newest assistant coach.
Armstrong, a native of Tasmania, Australia, boasts extensive credibility both as a player and coach at a young age.
In 2018, Armstrong was a member of the Australia U18 National Team. With that team he won a gold medal at the FIBA Asia Championship, averaging 4.5 points, two rebounds and 1.2 assists over five games with the squad.
The former guard then played four seasons at NCAA Division I member California Baptist (CBU) from 2019-2023. With the Lancers, Armstrong set the DI-era program record for most games played in a career, appearing in 121 games over four seasons. The 6-foot-6 sharpshooter also knocked down the second-most three-pointers in CBU's DI history with 201 triples during his playing days. He finished his career in 2023 ranked in the top-5 in points, field goals, rebounds, assists and steals at CBU.
Upon graduation, Armstrong returned home to Australia to begin a professional playing career with the North West Tasmania Thunder in the National Basketball League 1 (NBL 1). Armstrong has spent the last three seasons with the Thunder, averaging 13.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists while knocking down an average of 3.1 triples per game.
Armstrong spent his free time as a self-employed skills trainer during the first two years of his playing career. Then in 2024 he began his coaching career as a basketball development manager and the head men's basketball coach for the Wynyard Basketball Association, a men's semi-professional team in the North West Basketball Union (NWBU).
"Tre is a tremendous person with robust experience as a player and coach. His exposure to all levels of basketball – college, professional and youth – uniquely position him to impact our program," said head coach
Dan Evans. "Our student-athletes' experience and development will be enhanced through Tre's ability to connect and teach. He aligns with the values of North Georgia Basketball very well and brings a fresh perspective to all aspects of the program. We could not be prouder to add Tre and his wife Tahli to the Nighthawk Family."
Armstrong joins current assistant coach
Ben Casanova who returns to the program for his fifth season and graduate assistant coach
Joe Edwards who enters his second season with the program after serving as a volunteer assistant last year.
