Franks' Second Place Finish Lifts Nighthawks To Fourth Overall At Jerry Surratt Memorial

MONROE, N.C. – The University of North Georgia women's golf team completed its best finish of the season Tuesday at the Jerry Surratt Memorial with a fourth place finish in a field of 16 teams. Four of the nation's top-20 teams competed in the event as the Nighthawks recorded a team overall score of 886, just six shots out of first place Wingate.

Anderson  and Findlay finished in front of UNG with scores of 881 and 882 respectively.

On the individual leaderboard, freshman Abby Franks finished one shot out of the lead in second place at one-under for the tournament.

Franks went below par in two of her three rounds this week, with her best round coming Tuesday with a two-under 70. She started the day hot with a birdie on her first hole, the par-4 third. Staying at even par over the next six holes, Franks birdied the par-5 at 10 to get two shots below on the day.

She added another birdie at 16, again on a par-5 before bogeying 18 to drop a shot.

Her final-round 70 tied graduate teammate Amari Smith for the lowest round of any Nighthawk in the tournament. It also marked the second consecutive event in which head coach Sierra Campbell has had an individual finish in the top-two as junior Ellie Rippee won the Low Tide Intercollegiate last week.

At Stonebridge Golf Club on Tuesday, Smith had an up and down day, finishing with a four-over 76. She ended the tournament at seven-over in total, just three shots out of a top-10 finish.

The Nighthawks had another outstanding strike Tuesday, coming from senior Danielle Humphrey

After Rippee holed out from 115 yards for an eagle on hole 10 Monday, the only eagle of the tournament thus far, surely no one would top that Tuesday.

Humphrey had other plans. Sitting at 126 yards out on hole 13, Humphrey put her drive in the fairway to have a shot at the par-4 green. She pulled a nine iron out of her bag and laced a shot that was heading directly for the flag stick. Miraculously, it fell in for the second Nighthawk eagle of the tournament, and the only other eagle to join Rippee's in the entire 91 golfer event.

Humphrey has a solid showing, to boot. She finished  tied for 18th with an overall score of 225 at nine-over-par. Her eagle on 13 and a birdie on 18 helped her to a 72 in Tuesday's final round.

Now UNG will have some time off before competing in the Lander Lady Bearcat Spring Invitational, held at Greenwood Country Club in Greenwood, S.C. Fellow Peach Belt member Lander will welcome teams to play in the two day event beginning Monday, Mar. 25.
