No. 17 Nighthawks Fall To No. 5 Georgia Southern In Season Opener

STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 17 University of North Georgia rifle team fell in the Georgia State Championships against Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) No. 5 Georgia Southern on Saturday to open the 2024-25 season. 

With an aggregate score of 4614, UNG was unable to beat it's Southern Conference opponent in Georgia Southern who posted a 4722 score. 

In the Smallbore discipline, the Nighthawks had four shooters finish inside the top 10. 

Junior Maya Cameron led the way with a 578 score which included 29 centers, good enough for seventh place. Sophomore Corbin Jockers was not far behind Cameron with a 576 score and 24 centers. Freshmen Alison Sutherlin and Brianna Walter rounded out the top 10 with marks of 575 and 569 respectively. 

It was Cameron again who stood above the rest of her teammates in the Air Rifle discipline as well. With 38 centers and a 583 score, Cameron finished in eighth place in the Air Rifle leaderboard. 

Walter followed in ninth place with a 581 and 34 centers in her first collegiate competition. Sophomore Abby Swain finished in 10th place just one point behind Walter with a 580 total and 32 centers. 

On the aggregate leaderboard, Cameron (seventh place), Walter (ninth place) and Sutherlin (10th place) were the top finishers for head coach Tori Kostecki

Now the Nighthawks will prepare for a road match against Mt. Aloysius on Saturday, Oct. 19 in Lexington, Va.
