GREENWOOD, S.C. — Continuing with its opening day momentum, the University of North Georgia women's golf team picked up a top-five finish at the Meredith Insurance Fall Kickoff at The Links at Stoney Point in Greenwood, S.C., moving up multiple spots on the leaderboard in the third round after doing much of the same in the second.
Amari Smith was the leader into the clubhouse for North Georgia, finishing in a tie for seventh after finishing a four-over par third round and seven-over par tournament. The third-round 77 matched her first-round score, leaning on her second-round of 69 to hold near the top of the leaderboard.
Ellie Rippee made a charge through the field in her final round, shooting even-par on the day, carding two birdies on the third and fifth hole, having just one setback, a double bogey on the second hole.
Freshman duo
Abby Franks and
Camryn Wright had solid finishes, anchoring the third and fourth spots for North Georgia, with Franks finishing the round at five-over-par using a one-under back nine to stick in 29th place. Wright fell five spots in the final round, finishing in 37th to help the Nighthawks secure a top-five finish.
Lainey Panter moved up eight places on the leaderboard in the final round thanks to an even-par front nine, rounding out the Nighthawk lineup.
Anderson took home the team title with a total score of 872, finishing at eight-over par. Anderson's Kennedy McGaha was the individual winner, finishing the tournament five strokes ahead of the field with a blistering seven-under-par.
The NCAA Division II South Regional Preview hosted by Lee awaits the Nighthawks as the team heads to the Cleveland Golf Club in Cleveland, Tenn., on Sept. 18-19 to face a loaded field of NCAA regional hopefuls.
