GREENWOOD, S.C. - The No. 11 University of North Georgia pushed sixth-ranked Lander to the brink, but the Bearcats rallied late to take a 4-2 win and advance to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship match Monday afternoon.
The Bearcats took the doubles point by virtue of 6-2 decisions on the second and third lines, but
Joaquin Benoit quickly tied up the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win on the second singles line.
Lander pushed their lead out to 3-1 with straight set wins on the fifth and sixth lines. With the match on the line,
Zach Waldow forced a third set in his match on the fourth line, giving time for
Ryan Gaskin to win on the top line, 6-4, 6-4. Ultimately, it was the Bearcats who earned the fourth point, winning in third set tiebreaker at No. 4.
The Nighthawks will now await selections for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional which will be announced on May 4 at 8 p.m. by a selection show on NCAA.com. As of last week's regional rankings, UNG was one of eight teams "Under Consideration".
