DAHLONEGA - After giving up eight runs in the top of the second, the No. 30 University of North Georgia baseball team was 90 feet away from tying the game in the bottom of the ninth when Georgia Southwestern was able to find the final out in an 8-7 thriller Friday night at Bob Stein Stadium at Cottrell Park.
The Hurricanes tallied all eight of their runs off five RBI hits and a bases loaded hit by pitch in the second inning. UNG started chipping away in the bottom of the frame off back-to-back RBI doubles by
William Mapes and
Crews Taylor, scoring three runs to trim the lead to five.
North Georgia added four more in the bottom of the fourth off a
Jake Howard RBI single and a
Tim Conway three-run blast to left center, cutting the lead to one. The Nighthawks had at least one runner in scoring position in each of the final four innings but could not find a way to bring home the tying run.
NOTES
- Taylor led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, two walks and a RBI. Conway was 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI.

Drew Lang and
Beau Jones combined for seven innings of relief pitching, fanning 11 batters while giving up just five hits and two walks.
