YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - After dropping all three doubles matches, the No. 50 University of North Georgia men's tennis team won five singles matches to upset No. 27 Mount Olive, 5-4, Saturday at Young Harris.
The Trojans won the doubles matches in tightly contested action, especially at No. 1 doubles where
Niklas Zielen and
Ryan Gaskin dropped a 9-7 match.
The Nighthawks started battling back in singles as
Mark Laishley won in straight set to get UNG on the board. Mount Olive won at No. 2 singles to get to within a point of clinching the match, but UNG didn't go away quietly with Kevin Candido,
Carl Bedrot and
Jared Bones each winning their respective matches in straight sets, forcing a showdown at No. 1 singles.
Gaskin dropped the opening set, 6-4, before battling to a 7-6 (5) win in the second set. After forcing the third set, Gaskin ran through the final set, blanking Armando Ferreira, 6-0, in the third set to complete the come-from-behind upset.
The Nighthawks will jump back into Peach Belt Conference play on Wednesday, April 4, against Georgia College. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Park.
