DAHLONEGA | For the second time in her career,
Courtney Poole was perfect in the circle for the University of North Georgia softball team, sitting down 18 straight to defeat Coker, 9-0, in six innings. It marked the third perfect game in North Georgia history. The Nighthawks dropped their first game of the day to Wingate, 4-1.
GAME ONEMellena Helms got the Bulldogs on the board almost immediately depositing the second pitch of the game over the left field wall. The Nighthawks would even the score at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly by
Laura Spivey to score
Kelly Kahlert from third.
Wingate would score three unanswered with another solo homer by Helms in the third and two-run single in the fifth for the final 4-1 score.
GAME TWOMeredith Heyer got the Nighthawks on the board in the first inning with a RBI single that scored
Stephanie Hartness. Hartness scored again in the second when she hit a three-run homer to right center.
Hannah McSwain hit her first home run of the season in the fourth. The three-run shot to left center scored
Alexis Collis and
Whitney Worth to make it 7-0.
Heyer earned two more RBI in the sixth when she hit a single through the left side that scored Hartness and
Meagan May.
Poole struck out 11 Cobras in the contest including two innings where she struck out the side.
NOTES- Poole finished the day with 21 strikeouts combined, adding on to her NCAA-leading total. She now has 190 strikeouts in 2016.
- North Georgia is now 20-5 on the season.
- Hartness finished the day 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI. May finished 3-for-7 with two runs scored.
- In the other two games of the Captain D's Surf & Turf Classic Saturday, Wingate defeated UVA-Wise 10-2 in five innings. UVA-Wise bounced back in the nightcap with a thrilling 9-8 win over Coker.
