DAHLONEGA | Chris Cobb pitched 6.0 innings of one-run baseball and
Steven Tomlinson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored as the University of North Georgia baseball team finished off a season sweep of Anderson with a 7-1 win Tuesday night as part of UNG's Make-A-Wish Day built by the Nighthawk Nation. North Georgia improves to 17-13 with the win in its first-ever nationally televised game, while the Trojans fall to 13-20.
The Nighthawks didn't wait long to get on the scoreboard in the first inning, putting up two runs in the inning after loading the bases to start the inning.
Steven Tomlinson highlighted the inning with a RBI double down the left field line to put UNG up, 2-0.
North Georgia scored again in the fourth on a
Ryan Tomita sacrifice fly that scored Tomlinson. After a Trojan run in the fifth,
Connor Hoover got the run back for UNG on a RBI single to left center to keep a three-run lead for the Nighthawks, 4-1.
In the sixth, the Nighthawks added some fireworks to the day as
Taylor Jones hit a two-run homer to right field that gave North Georgia a 6-1 lead. The final Nighthawk run came in the seventh as Jones got a third RBI, getting the game to its final score of 7-1.
The Nighthawk pitching staff retired 13 of the final 14 Trojans to keep the lead intact, including striking out nine of 10 Anderson batters through the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
NOTES- Cobb earned his third win of the season in his second start of the season. He gave up just five hits and one walk while striking out six.
Zach Verner came into the game in relief and doubled his season strikeout total with five strikeouts in six batters faced.
- The Nighthawks went 10-for-30 (.333) at the plate tonight while drawing seven walks and striking out just once. Tomita finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. Jones had his second three-RBI game of the season as he went 1-for-4.
- North Georgia has now won nine straight against the Trojans and improve to 27-5 all-time against Anderson. The win finishes off the fourth consecutive season sweep for UNG.
