SAVANNAH, Ga. | Timely hitting paired with another great effort in the circle by
Courtney Poole gave the No. 12 University of North Georgia softball team a doubleheader sweep of rival-Armstrong State Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 4-1 before taking game two, 1-0. The Nighthawks move to 24-5 on the season and open Peach Belt action with a 2-0 mark.
GAME ONE North Georgia took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a pair of two-out RBI singles by
Hannah McSwain and
Meagan May.
Katie Block would drive in another run in the next inning with a single to left to score
Jessica Finch.
Poole struck out the first six Pirates that she faced on the day, but Armstrong finally got on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo home run down the right field line by Peyton Roth, to make it a 3-1 game.
Stephanie Hartness provided some extra insurance in the top of the sixth depositing a single into right field to score McSwain and give the game its final 4-1 score.
GAME TWOThe second game of the day was a true pitcher's duel between Poole and Jane Trzaska.
UNG scored the only run of the game in the top of the first with the help of a strike out.
Meagan May reached to lead off the game on a strike three-wild pitch. The wild pitch bug would stay with Trzaska as May would advance to second and third on wild pitches as well. Hartness went on to walk and stole second to put some early pressure on the ASU pitcher with two in scoring position and no one out. After Finch lined out to the pitcher,
Brittani Crawford stepped up with a double to center scoring May. Hartness would be thrown out at home, but Poole made the one run stand tossing a five hit shutout to give North Georgia the 1-0 win.
