SPARTANBURG, S.C. | The No. 22 University of North Georgia softball team took advantage of a rare tripleheader at the Mid-South Classic at Tyger River Park picking up three victories over St. Joseph's (Ind.), Southern Indiana, and Queens (N.C.). Nighthawk ace
Courtney Poole earned the victory in all three contests, coming on in relief in game one and then pitching the final 14 innings of the day.
After trailing 6-1 in the fourth inning, North Georgia mounted a comeback that included a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a
Brittani Crawford three-run homer, that evened the game at 6-6. The Pumas scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth and carried a one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh. That's when
Ansley Phillips delivered a two-run walk-off double to give the Nighthawks a 8-7 win to open the day.
Dominant pitching paired with a five-run third inning paved the way for victory in North Georgia's second game of the day against Southern Indiana.
Alexis Collis provided a three-run homerun in the third, while Poole picked up 10 strikeouts in the contest.
UNG finished out the day with a 3-0 victory over Queens (N.C.), scoring all three runs in the third inning with RBI hits from
Meredith Heyer and Phillips. Poole (12-0) collected another 13 strikeouts without allowing a walk in the final game of the day.
The Nighthawks will wrap up play at the Mid-South Classic tomorrow with games against Bellarmine and Catawba.
