DAHLONEGA | The University of North Georgia men's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon with a 77-71 loss to Georgia Southwestern in UNG's Memorial Hall. The Nighthawks finish the year with a 15-11 overall record and 9-10 mark in league play.
After trailing by as many as 12 (47-35) in the second half, North Georgia used a 14-0 burst to take a two-point lead, 49-47, with 13:02 left to play.
A free throw from
Sean Brennan at the 8:02 mark gave North Georgia its final lead of the game, 57-56.
Ebo Smith's jumper with 1:01 left in the contest cut the Hurricane lead down to one, 72-71, but a late possession 3-pointer by Damien Leonard iced the game for Georgia Southwestern.
Corey Green led the Nighthawks with a season-high 23 points and capped his third double-double of the year with 11 rebounds.
In his final game as a Nighthawk,
Travis Core came off the bench to reach double figures with 10 points.
The Nighthawks held a 37-29 edge on the glass.
GSW was led by Leonard's game-high 24 points including eight-of-14 from long range. The Hurricanes collectively hit 15-of-34 (44%) shots from behind the 3-point line.
Despite finishing the league schedule tied with Young Harris for fourth place in the West division, the Nighthawks are eliminated from PBC postseason through divisional record in the league's tiebreaker system.
