Chambless Wins GCSU Bobcat Invitational, No. 1 Nighthawks Finished Tied For Second

EATONTON, Ga. – The No. 1 University of North Georgia men's golf team finished tied for second at the GCSU Bobcat Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Golf Club at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee. The Nighthawks finished the three-round event in a tie for fourth place after Monday's rounds. On Tuesday, the team posted an overall score of 286 to finish the event at six-over-par with an 858. 

Graduate student Will Chambless collected his first win of the season with rounds of 69, 70 and 69 at the 4,701-yard, par 70 course. He finished at two-under-par, beating out Florida Southern's Adam Alvarez by a stroke. Chambless utilized a three birdie cushion to hold the top spot on the leaderboard as the day progressed. 

With birdies at holes 6, 11 and 14, bogeys at 17 and 18 didn't phase Chambless as he made par on his final three holes to win the event. According to Clippd's computer scoring metrics, Chambless currently ranks as the No. 4 men's golfer in NCAA Division II. In three team events this spring, Chambless has finished in fourth place or better in all of them. 

Sophomore Hunter Smith posted a four-over 74 on Tuesday to join Chambless in the top-20 finishing tied for 16th. 

Head coach Bryson Worley's team also got a pair of top-30 finishes from grad student Jack Vajda and junior Hughes Threlkeld.  Vajda finished eight-over-par with rounds of 72, 73 and 73 to finish tied for 25th in the event. Threlkeld scored a 73 on Tuesday after a 74 and 72 on Monday to finish tied for 29th at nine-over par

No. 3 Georgia Southwestern won the team portion of the event with a combined one-under of 851.The Hurricanes utilized two eagles in the tournament as they had three different players finish in the top-10 in the event, led by junior Erik Fogel who finished tied for third at even par.

Now the Nighthawks get ready for a trip to Lenoir City, Tenn. as they'll compete in the Tennessee River Rumble, hosted by Lincoln Memorial.

Competition begins at Windriver Golf Club on Monday, Mar. 25 and will conclude the next day on Tuesday.
