PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – The No. 1 University of North Georgia men's golf team completed the Barton Spring Bulldog Clash in seventh place out of 22 teams Tuesday afternoon.Host No. 23 Barton won the event as the only team combining to finish under par. The Bulldogs came in just below the line with a team score of 839, one-under par over the three round tournament.
Held at Caledonia Golf Club, the competition played host to seven of the nation's top 25 teams per Clippd, including four Peach Belt members (No. 1 UNG, No. 5 USC Aiken, No. 11 Lander, No. 17 Columbus State). All four PBC competitors finished in the top seven of the event, led by Columbus State with a one-over, 841 team score.
The Nighthawks' seventh place finish came after the team combined for a five-over-par score of 845 during the three rounds.
Graduate student
Will Chambless finished in fourth place among all individuals in the event. The Macon, Ga. native went below par in all three rounds of competition, which included a two-under 68 in the opening round. In the final round of the event Chambless utilized a two-under 33 on the front nine, fueled by birdies on the par-5 second and eighth holes, to finish the day with a one-under 69.
Junior
Ethan Day was the only other Nighthawk to finish in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. With a total score of 209 at one-under par, Day completed round three in a five-way tie for ninth. Day's ninth place finish comes after he highlighted his team's performance with the lowest round of any Nighthawk, shooting a four-under 66 in round two Tuesday morning.
In the stellar round, Day strung birdies together in three-straight holes and in five of seven on the front nine alone. While he double bogeyed the par-4 fourteenth, a get back birdie at sixteen helped Day finish with a 66.
Now UNG will return to the Peach State for its next competition as the team will head to Homer, Ga. for the Medal Match Play vs. Grand Valley State. The event takes place Friday, Mar. 8 from Chimney Oaks Golf Club.
