GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A pair of teams representing the No. 6 University of North Georgia men's golf team picked up top-five finishes as the Nighthawks earned a second-place finish at the 2nd Annual Mizuno Intercollegiate. North Georgia's second team finished in fourth, providing a solid showing for the program.
UNG finished 16 strokes under par, good enough for second place, led by a strong showing from
Noah Zediker, who finished at six-under-par for the tournament using a four-under 68 in the third round to finish in a tie for fifth and earning a spot on the All-Tournament team.
In the other lineup, North Georgia finished the tournament at two-under-par, led by
Jack Vajda, who struggled in the third round but kept towards the top of the leaderboard after two solid rounds in the first and second. Vajda finished the tournament in a tie for ninth.
Hughes Threlkeld added some firepower, using his three-under-par scorecard in the second round as a catalyst to bump into sole possession of 14th with an overall score of two-under-par. Just behind him was
Ethan Day in a tie for 15th place, finishing just one stroke behind Threlkeld at one-under.
Hunter Smith and
Gabe Larson were just one stroke after that, finishing at even-par and grabbing a tie for 18th, with Smith rounding out the scoring lineup for the second-place finishers.
Colby Bennett (+1) finished in a tie for 21st while
Stephen Kinsel (+2) was just behind him in a tie for 25th, rounding out the scoring Nighthawks on the fourth-place team.
Playing as an individual,
Rhett Smith finished in a tie for 37th, while
Myles Jones finished in a tie for 53rd, finishing out the second-place lineup. Rounding out the remaining North Georgia golfers were
Grant Langford (t-69th),
Garrett Horton (t-81st),
Dayton Humphrey (t-93rd) and
Connor Horton (t-93rd).
Lincoln Memorial won the team title with a tournament record 54-hole score of 276-280-281--837. The Railsplitters' opening round 276 (-12) also set a new tournament single round scoring record. Columbus State's Martin Gruendemann claimed individual medalist honors by a single shot with av68-70-69--207 (-9).
North Georgia will continue their fall schedule with the Cateechee Fall Invitational, hosted by Erskine, in Hartwell, Ga. The event is set to take place on Oct. 2-3 as UNG continues a fall schedule that plays all five tournaments in Georgia.
