WINGATE, N.C. - Tied 4-4 with one match to play,
Adrienne Bofinger cruised through a third set to give the No. 27 University of North Georgia women's tennis team its first ever win over No. 21 Georgia College, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Felicia Baratta and
Holly Bennett garnered the Nighthawks' only point of doubles, winning 8-4 after the Bobcats pulled the first two points of the match. Bennett tied the match with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
The Bobcats retook the lead in a straight-set win at No. 5 singles, but
Lexa Loden tied the match again with a two-set win of her own. UNG took its first lead of the match after
Vaishali Jorge won in three sets at No. 4 singles, but Georgia College's Jena Kelly took a hard fought win at the top flight, setting the stage for the deciding match at No. 2 singles.
Bofinger took the first set, 7-6, before GC's Valeria Lopez won the second set, 6-2. Bofinger took an early 2-0 lead in the final set, and after Lopez won the third game, the freshman won the final four games to push North Georgia to the second round for the first time ever.
The Nighthawks will now battle No. 15 Wingate tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. for a chance to go to Surprise, Arizona, and continue competition for a NCAA National Championship.
