CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No. 20 University of North Georgia rifle team competed in the NCAA Qualifier on Saturday inside the Inouye Marksmanship Center at The Citadel, finishing second out of six teams.
Ninth-ranked North Carolina State won the team competition with 4,670 points and was followed UNG's 4,551 points. The Citadel's co-ed team scored 4,509 to claim third place, finishing ahead of Georgia Southern's 4,483 points and The Citadel women's season-best score of 4,361. UAB, which only competes in air rifle, scored 2,241 points in the event.
North Georgia's aggregate score of 4,551 marked a new team high score for the spring semester.
Tobin Sanctuary registered a personal record smallbore score of 575, good for fourth place out of 58 shooters.
Ruthanne Conner (569, 6
th) and
Andrew Abernathy (560, 10
th) contributed with top-10 results.
Brianna Shaw was the Nighthawks' top performer in air rifle with a mark of 576, placing her 10
th out of 58 competitors. Teammates Conner (574, 11
th) and
David Turner (569, 15th) also posted top-15 finishes.
Conner and Shaw each landed in the top-10 in the aggregate standings.
The Nighthawks are off next weekend before hosting the Southern Conference Championships scheduled for March 4-5.
