CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 20
th-ranked University of North Georgia rifle team finished second overall behind 4
th-ranked Air Force and defeated SoCon foes Citadel, VMI and Wofford on Saturday inside the Citadel's Inouye Marksmanship Center.
By virtue of the wins over VMI and the Citadel, UNG claims the Senior Military College Championship four the fourth consecutive year. North Georgia has claimed the title in each of the competition's four years of existence.
Fourth-ranked Air Force won the match with 4,767 points, and No. 20 North Georgia placed second with 4,547 points to narrowly hold off the host's Citadel's 4,518 points. VMI's men's team was fourth with 4,488 points, with the Keydet women's 4,408 points placing fifth. Wofford scored 4,292 to take sixth, and The Citadel women placed seventh with 4,263 points.
Collectively, UNG posted a 2,252 in smallbore and a 2,295 in air rifle.
Ruthanne Conner was the Nighthawks' top performer as she posted a 575 (5
th) in smallbore and a 583 (4
th) in air rifle, earning the junior a pair of top-five finishes. Conner's smallbore score also tied her personal record.
North Georgia's weekend competition continues Sunday with an exhibition dual at ninth-ranked N.C. State on Sunday, Jan. 29. Competition is slated to begin at 10 a.m. inside Reynolds Coliseum and can be seen live on ESPN3/Watch ESPN/ACC Network EXTRA.
