ATLANTA | The University of North Georgia softball program was recognized for their 2015 NCAA Division II National Championship Thursday morning at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta. Head coach
Mike Davenport and several members of last years' team were welcomed with a Commendation by Governor Nathan Deal on the north side of the Capitol.
Â
Following a photo opportunity with the Governor, UNG President Dr. Bonita Jacobs, Director of Athletics
Lindsay Reeves, Coach Davenport,
Kim McMillan, and
Meagan May were welcomed to the floor of the Georgia Senate. There, Senator Steve Gooch of Dahlonega issued a Proclamation to the team for their successful 2015 season. Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, a Gainesville native, spoke on the academic and athletic success at UNG, followed by Dr. Jacobs commenting on the softball program's storied past leading to the school's first-ever national title.
Â
After the Senate recognized the team, the group made the short walk to the House of Representatives where Speaker David Ralston, a UNG graduate, yielded to Representative Kevin Tanner of Dawsonville, who introduced a Proclamation to the team along with members who represent each district a student-athlete was from. After the Proclamation, many Representatives took pictures with their constituents on the UNG softball team along with the national championship trophy.
Â
The final stop of the day was Senator Gooch's office where the players delivered the trophy, which will stay at the Capitol for several days traveling to offices of both Senate and House members that represent UNG players and coaches.
Â
North Georgia was the only NCAA Division I or II softball team that was made up entirely of student-athletes from the state of Georgia in 2015, making the trip to the Capitol even more special for the team, the Governor, Senators, and Representatives. This marked the fourth NCAA softball national championship for the state of Georgia, with two previous titles coming from Kennesaw State and one from Valdosta State, all of which were won at the Division II level.
